"Windows 7" 32 bit - Display resolution problem
Hi, I'm struggling with this issue for quite a while and finally I decided to ask for some help I have 3 desktop computers - all connected to one shared Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor, via a PS2 4 Port "LevelOne" KVM, model: 0412 . My monitor is "Samsung" LED, Model: S22A300B * Comp. A, runs Win XP Pro SP3 and has a "NVIDIA" Ge-Force MMX-440 128 MB Display adapter. * Comp. B, runs Win 7 Ultimate SP1 and has a "MANLI" Ge-Force 9500 GT 512 MB Display adapter. * Comp. C, runs Win 7 Ultimate SP1 and has a ATI Radeon HD-4350 2568 MB Display adapter. All 3 Comps. Resolution is set to: 1920x1080 and everything works fine. At the end of the day I, usually, put all my comps into Sleep Mode [Hibernate]. The problem starts when the time comes to wake them up. My main work is done on the XP Pro comp. but when I need to check or do, something on the other two – I just press the main switch and wait for them to startup, while continuing my work on the XP Pro comp. When I switch the KVM to the just started up comp. the resolution is BAD (1280x1024) and I have to change it. Manually, to 1920x1080. Same this happens with ALL computers. When I first switch the KVM towards a comp. and thereafter start it – there is no problem as the resolution remains OK, as it was when putting the comp. to sleep. I checked the whole story by completely shutting down the comp. but no avail. Well…, I hate the solution that forces me to first switch to the right comp. > switch it on AND WAIT UNTIL ALL DRIVERS WERE LOADED in order to get the high and good resolution. This is where you experts come into the picture. Did you ever face such a problem - described above - and/or does anybody know the solution. Thanks in Advance, Michael Avidan "Microsoft®" MVP

Hi, I do not use a KVM and hence havent faced the exact issue, however the scenario isnt alien to me. I have worked on similar issues where the resolution resets after reboot and have to be set manually. Also have personally seen this issue in my workstation where the resolution resets to 1024 on reboot. There was multiple approaches/resolution to each case, they being: Removing all the display adapters from device manager and associated driver Making sure the registry does not reference the stale video resolution of 1024 and correcting it if necessary Checking/reinstalling any software video adapters installed on the system (like ones installed by remote management software) Does you KVM have a driver installed on these boxes? Does the issue occur if the KVM is not involved? Also verify the configuration inside these registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO [the profile id and control set may differ] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\UnitedVideo\CONTROL\VIDEO HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/26ee0008-1129-44dd-8151-04c8a20bfa7bSumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support

I would consider that the device "scan" loses the resolution when a computer sleeps. I suggest testing the reset auto-scan of the KVM device after waking a computer using the keyboard command scroll lock + scroll lock + S. Consult the user manual and data sheet. http://global.level1.com/Home-Products/KVM-Switches/PS-2-KVM-Switches/KVM-0412/463.html I would also suggest contacting level one support. http://global.level1.com/getsupport.php?action=init

You'll likely need to upgrade to a "EDID" capable KVM, one capable of pass-through of the DDC/CI data as well. Basically, the Win7 KVM interface was change for a "better experience" and in doing so, rendered many otherwise perfectly functional KVMs "obsolete". Please see the MS Display Guidlines for KVM at the following MS link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487352.aspx You are looking for the document KVM-Win7.docx I spent hours helping a buddy get his old KVM working, in the end it just was not possible. This of course forced him to upgrade. DAS

I would look at upgrading the KVM, in our current lab we use an old and abused KVM and it has the exact same issue on screen resolution, At out desks we have the newer belken kvm's and I don't have this issue at all.:P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

Thank you all. Keeping in mind that it is not my mother's tongue - I hope you don't mind my bad English. I'll try to answer to all the suggestions (please don't mind the order): 1) At the moment - upgrading the KVM is not an option. 2) I skipped the test with no KVM attached - because whenever the KVM is switched against the switched-on comp. – the 1920x1080 resolution shows up as expected. 3) As far as I know there is no KVM Driver involved. (The user manual states that all the user has to do is to connect the cables from the KVM to the various Comps. and nothing else. 4) I checked the Registry in one of the two "Win 7" Comps. * 0000 shows: 1920x1080 * Subfolder: Mon12345678 shows: 1024x768 *** Pls have a look at the following picture: I'm afraid to alter Registry values even after a full backup of the Registry. 5) ScrollLock + ScrollLock+ S is for cycling through the connected/operative comps. and I after runnig it I didn't see any affect the cycling has upon the Resolution. 6) I found out that after a "Win 7" machine launches with 1024x768 Res. – if I go to Display Properties and press Detect Display it automatically switches to 1920x1080. Same goes for pressing Detect Display within the "Catalyst" Control Center – it also switches to 1920x1080. I think the easiest way, to switch to the appropriate resolution, will be if someone can come up with a Keyboard shortcut to run a Detect Display procedure. A better solution will be a shortcut that enforces the 1920x1080 res. Att: Mr. Jason Hiegel 1) What type and P/N is the "Belkin" KVM you have mentioned above ? 2) Is it a 4 port KVM PS/2 type and does it support Mic. & Speakers switching ? Thanks again, Michael Avidan "Microsoft" MVP

Did you review the document at the link I provided? The information contained there is critically important in your understanding of the issue. Basically, the purpose of the EDID capability is to keep a "copy" of the monitor's configuration "live" on the port so that it doesn't need a manual refresh to detect the screen size setting. Honestly, I put far too much time in on my friends machine trying to find way around this new Windows 7 requirement. I could have saved a lot of time, consternation, and outright frustration if we just believed the new way of doing things REQUIRED the capabilities outlined in that document. You say replacing it is not an option. I'm afraid its the ONLY option. I don't enjoy being the bearer of bad news, I wouldn't have bothered if I wanted to see you suffer through all the stuff we tried. I gave you the answer you need, I'm sorry it doesn't sit well with you. DAS

DAS, Pls bear with me. I have read the document and understood the most of it. I said that upgrading is not an option at this moment - so, I still wait to see if someone will come up with a solution such as definning a shortcut that will take me as close as to where the resolution can be altered and/or to the Detect Display screen. I don't mind pressing 2-3 keys and/or 1-2 mouse clicks when ever I FORGET to switch to the machine BEFORE turning it on. (If I do not forget - the problem doesn't exsist) Thanks for all your efforts, so far, -------------------------------- Jason, Thanks, but this one does not meet me requirements. I need a PS/2 KVM supporting the regular (old) Display Connector (not DVI). -------------------------------- There is an "ATEN" local Dealer/representative. Tomorrow I'll make some inquiries regarding the CS84U KVM' which unfortunately lacks the Audio switching capability. I understood that the Video DynaSync™ technology equals to EDID. http://www.aten.com/products/productItem.php?model_no=CS84U http://www.aten-usa.com/whitepaper/ATEN-Video-DynaSync.pdf Michael Avidan "Microsoft" MVP

I have a mix of DVI, VGA and PS2 and USB, what I did is get online and got some PS2 to USB converters for the PS2 cables, that was all of $5.00 for 2 sets, and a DVI to VGA adapter at Fry's electronics for all of $7.00 It has worked like a champ for me.:P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. If a shortcut is all you want for the time being, consider 3rd party utilities like the one below that came up in a quick search. BEFORE PROCEEDING, note that these came up in a simple search and I have NOT TESTED them myself for any issues or risks associated, Hence test it before using any of them. http://www.12noon.com/displaychanger.htm http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/multires.shtm Another option is a powershell script from Technet scriptcenter: http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ScriptCenter/2a631d72-206d-4036-a3f2-2e150f297515/ Again, none of these has been tested by me. There is a scripting solution that opens the display control panel GUI, then uses the "Shell.SendKeys" method to interact with the control panel as you would using the keyboard. The problem is, .SendKeys is widely regarded in the scripting community as being unreliable, and is subject to doing some very wrong things should the design of the code not match EXACTLY the control panel GUI it is controlling. This means it is subject to abject failure with possibly destructive (at some level) results if mis-applied. Best of luck with it. DAS

Hi, again, I hope some of you believe in miracles – because what I'm going to tell you sounds like one. Since this morning - everything works fine as if my KVM was replaced, with a more sophisticated one, by a bunch of dwarfs, during the night. Upon "Waking-up" a machine, while working on another machine, meaning NO KVM/Monitor linked – results with a proper resolution (1920x1080). At first, I thought the KVM has some "voltage leftover" so I decided to check, again, after 5-6 hours and ALL 3 machines show up with the proper resolution. To make things clear - I always use Hibernate, - not Shut-Down, nor Stand-By. I have no logical explanation to this behavior – unless the KVM has some build-in feature/component – by which it has been taught what the correct resolution is. As you recall we are talking about a US $ 45-48 worth KVM and I could not find any evidence for its supporting EDID. I will be more than happy to learn about this "weird" behavior - if someone has a good and persuading explanation. Thanks, again, to all who took part in trying to help on this issue. I really hope nothing will go wrong after a couple of days. In any case, I have the link of this thread ready under hand together with the proposed 3rd party utilities.
